About Us

Step into the story of South Yorkshire’s rich transport heritage at the South Yorkshire Transport Museum— a vibrant, volunteer-powered charity where history doesn’t just sit on display… it moves.

Founded in 1995 as the Sheffield Bus Museum Trust Limited, the museum has grown into an accredited transport museum and a much-loved destination for enthusiasts, families, schools and community groups alike.

🚍 Where History Comes to Life

Home to over 50 beautifully preserved historic vehicles across 24,000 square feet of modern exhibition space, our collection spans:

  • Vintage buses

  • Classic cars

  • Motorcycles

  • Bicycles

  • Lorries and commercial vehicles

  • Transport memorabilia and interactive exhibits

Many of our vehicles have been painstakingly restored by our dedicated volunteers — passionate individuals who give their time and skills to keep South Yorkshire’s transport story alive.

Our current premises offer a spacious and welcoming experience — a far cry from our earlier home at Tinsley (1997–2007) — allowing us to display more of our collection than ever before.

🚌 Ride Into the Past

On our popular Open Days, visitors can enjoy free short trips on selected historic buses— a rare chance to not just see history, but experience it. There’s nothing quite like the sound, feel and atmosphere of a classic bus in motion.

☕ Relax and Refuel

Need a break? Our recently refurbished café provides the perfect spot to unwind with a drink and a bite to eat during Open Days or school and group visits.

❤️ Powered by Passion

As a long-standing non-profit organisation, we rely on:

  • Visitor entry fees

  • Donations

  • Grant funding

  • Sponsorship

  • Vehicle hire income

  • And the incredible dedication of our volunteers

Every visit directly supports the preservation of South Yorkshire’s transport heritage for future generations.

Whether you’re a lifelong transport enthusiast, planning a family day out, organising a school visit, or simply curious about the vehicles that shaped our region — there’s something here for everyone.

Come and discover how South Yorkshire moved through history.
